Biggest Debt-for-Nature Swap in History!

Costa Rica has been on the receiving end of the biggest debt-for nature swap in history. The US has forgiven its $26 million, and drawn up a plan for it to be utilised to finance forest conservation over the next 16 years. This will ensure the protection of one of the world’s greatest and most beautiful biodiversity hotspots, and is using science to evaluate where and how to direct the funds for maximum effect.

Costa Rica’s lush tropical rainforests are home to scores of beautiful and endangered species, including Jaguars, Macaws, Howler Monkeys, Tree Frogs and Squirrel Monkeys. However, the ecosystem has come under increased pressure from logging, developments and expansion, mining and unregulated tourism. The 6 main areas that will benefit from the swap, and therefore be protected, are: The Osa Peninsula, The Amistad, Maquenque, Tortuguero, Zona Norte del Rincon de la Vieja, and the Nicoya Peninsula.

Not only have plans been drawn up to replenish forest and biodiversity, but it will also educate and support local communities to allow them to pursue sustainable and economically viable livelihoods, thus improving their lives and protecting the biodiverse resources on which they depend.

This is not the only swap of its kind however. Previous to Costa Rica, The Nature Conservancy has planned and executed Debt-for-Nature swaps in Guatemala, Belize, Columbia, Jamaica, the US, Panama and Peru. <a href=”Read More here.
